Sushi Food Hybrids

Sushi food hybrids are a real trend, with foods like ‘teriyaki steak sushi burger’ and ‘sushi burrito’ becoming more common. And while mixing different cuisines together is nothing new, doing so using sushi or other Japanese-based dishes is both innovative and mouth-watering. Keep reading to find out the best sushi food hybrids that you can make at home.

1. Teriyaki steak sushi burger

A sushi burger is just like a regular burger, but the buns are made of sushi rice instead of bread. For the contents between the buns, you can choose to either have a sushi-style filling or a more traditional meat filling. If you were to choose Teriyaki steak as the burger’s filling, the most important thing to do is to use the best cut of steak to achieve a successful sushi teriyaki burger. Make sure you choose a cut that can be sliced thinly so it remains tender after being grilled.

The rest of the process is fairly straightforward. You’ll need to use teriyaki sauce for the steak’s flavour, and prepare the sushi rice correctly. To make the sushi buns by hand, you’ll need a bowl of water to dip your hands in before handling the rice — that way, the rice won’t stick to your hands and you can mold it into a round shape. Then, fry the rice buns a little so they’re toasty, and assemble the burger to enjoy your new hybrid sushi meal.

2. Vegan sushi doughnuts

Vegan sushi doughnuts are a great idea. For the recipe you’ll need 4 cups of cooked sushi rice, 1 cup of rice wine vinegar, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 1/4 cup of Mirin. Simply mix all the main ingredients together and top with your favourite toppings. For the toppings, you can use the carrot stripes, avocado slices, pickled ginger, cucumber, nori stripes, chopped chives, sesame, fish or even egg.

3. Sushi burrito (aka ‘shushirrito’)

This recipe mixes Mexican and Japanese cuisines. A sushirrito is basically an overstuffed sushi roll — one that you can prepare with any fillings you want! For this recipe, you’ll need sesame seeds, one cup of sushi rice (cooked according to package directions), one peeled carrot, one cucumber, one daikon, one avocado thinly sliced, sashimi-grade tuna steak and one tablespoon of Myrons ponzu sauce. You can use seaweed to wrap up your sushirrito, or regular wheat wraps if you’re not a fan of seaweed.

4. Salmon poke sushi tacos

Another Mexican and Japanese fusion recipe, salmon poke sushi tacos are sure to take your tastebuds on a trip. They’re perfect if you feel like sushi but don’t have the time or resources to roll it perfectly. Ingredients for this delicious recipe include sushi rice, sushi vinegar, salmon, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, sesame seeds, togarashi, and chives. Start by boiling the rice. Once the rice is boiled and has cooled down, prepare the salmon poke. Just mix the salmon with the rest of the ingredients and keep it in the fridge until ready to serve. Then, grab a 9cm mold and a sharp knife, and cut the nori into a round shape. Repeat until you have 16 round nori sheets, and then fill each one with a mixture of the other ingredients.

5. Sushi pizza

Sushi pizza both looks and tastes incredible. You’ll need the typical sushi ingredients for this one, including sushi rice, rice vinegar, avocado, cucumber, ponzu sauce, among others. Cook the rice according to the instructions, then transfer it to a baking sheet and let it cool down for about 10 minutes. Then, form a large rice patty, and cook it until it’s lightly golden and crisp. When that’s done, gather your pizza toppings. Spread wasabi mayonnaise in a thin layer over the rice patty, and start arranging the smoked salmon, cucumber slices, avocado slices, and anything else on top of the pizza base. To finish, combine soy glaze and ponzu sauce in a small bowl and sprinkle the mixture on top.
