Amazing Miniature Japanese Cooking Videos

We all know that Tokyo is one of the most overcrowded cities in the world and that homes, apartments and hotels are getting smaller all across Japan. The introduction of the capsule hotel in 1979 showed just how tiny living space can be. But it’s a series of new YouTube clips that is taking the Japanese small trend to a new extreme.

Over the last few months, the Miniature Space Channel has been posting a series of crazy videos, depicting a Japanese chef cooking on tiny little stoves and using tiny little knives, saucepans and frypans. The bonsai-style cooking videos have been racking up the view counts, with many of the 30 videos posted reaching hundreds of thousands of views in just a few short weeks.

Among the most popular is a clip showing how to make miniature french fries using a mini fire pit and wok. Nearly 700,000 people have watched chef meticulously cut up tiny little slithers of potato using a tiny little knife before crisping the chips to perfection in the hot oil.

Another favourite is chef’s Miso Soup recipe, which not only shows how to prepare a miniature miso soup in the cutest little camping stove you’ve ever seen (check out the little ladle too), but it also features a gorgeous little dining table, floor cushions and teeny weeny serving bowls.

Whoever is behind the trending new channel has cleverly mastered the art of preparing fully edible meals from everyday foods. The yakitori is made from real chicken, the sushi made from real fish and the mini soup made from real cabbage. There is a delicious-looking tagine made from baby corn, onion, brussel sprout and chicken. You can even pick up some recipe tips, such as this yummy looking curry made of carrot, potato and chicken and curry seasoning.

Meals aren’t just restricted to dinner either, with the endearing videos featuring breakfast, lunch and even drink ideas.

For breakfast, chef shows you how to prepare miniature pancakes on the stove using the smallest spatula you’ve ever seen. Flipping pancakes is hard enough to do correctly normally, let alone when the spatula is no bigger than your fingernail! The pancakes are then served on a tiny little plate, topped with maple syrup and a dollop of butter and to wash it all down, chef even pours a mini glass of milk.

Not hungry? Why not just have tea? This kawaii video shows that even Japanese tea can be miniature when you use a pocket-sized kettle and just a few fresh leaves. You could take it one step further and create five kinds of tea in a miniature set up of a Japanese Tea House. Brewed in micro teapots, chef makes tea, roasted tea, powder green tea, strawberry tea and green tea.

Rumours are flying about who has created the videos, with some claiming that they are created by kids. But by the looks of the hand that carefully works at each vegetable, chef is very much a grown man. Japan has long had an obsession with all things kawaii and in fact, the Miniature Space Channel is not the first to tackle this type of cuisine.

Celine Hedegaard, of Denmark, first started tackling miniature edible food videos about a year ago, under the name AkameruKawaii. Her speciality is baking and AkameruKawaii has clocked up no less than 56,000 subscribers. Collectively, her videos have received over 4 million views! Her videos include miniature victoria sponge cake, tiny red velvet Valentine cupcakes, and even a miniature gingerbread house.
